Richard BROADHURST was born in 1855 in Hale, Cheshire. He is the son of John and Frances Adshead BROADHURST.  On 19 June 1876, at about 21 years old, Richard Broadhurst married 15 year old Sarah Ann Jones (b.1861 Wilmslow) at St. Mary’s in Bowdon, Cheshire, a village just west of Hale and 1 mile south of Altrincham. Richard and Sarah Ann had eleven known children:

2. Jane Ann (“Annie” abt 1879 Wilmslow)
3. Sarah (abt 1882 Leigh, married John James WOODWARD)
4. John Richard (28 March 1884, Leigh, married Edith Mary BAILEY)
5. Gertrude (abt 1887 Leigh, married Arthur Adams)
6. Mary (“May “or “Mae” abt 1888 Leigh)
7. Peter Ernest (abt 1889 Rochdale, married Elizabeth ASPIN)
8. Nellie (abt 1891 Shaw, married William Thomas HOWORTH)
9. Violet (abt 1894 Wilmslow, married William DAVIS)
10. Percy (abt 1896 Heywood, married Edith Annie BRADBURY)
11. William Arthur (“Willie” abt 1898 Blackburn, married Emily READ)

1881 Census. By 1881, Richard and Sarah Ann lived at 68 Manor Road in Altrincham in St. John’s parish. Altrincham is less than two miles NNE of Bowdon. Richard had left the farm and was working as a Bricklayer’s laborer. Along with Richard and Sarah Ann the household included daughters Frances M. and Jane Ann as well as Richard’s 70 year old mother, Frances, and 69 year old father, John.

It’s likely Richard and Sarah Ann lived in Leigh, Lancashire around 1882-1888 as they had four children born here during this period; Sarah, John Richard, Gertrude and Mary.

1891 Census. By 1891, Richard had moved his family about 18 miles east-northeast to 2 Spadescroft, Crompton, Lancashire, where he returned to work on a farm as a farm laborer. Crompton was a cotton mill town and Fannie and Annie, 14 and 12, worked in a mill. Richard and Sarah Ann had two more children by this time; Peter Ernest and Nellie.

1901 Census. During the 1901 census Richard’s family had moved about 5 miles west and lived at 1 Peel Street in Heywood, Lancashire. By this time Richard and Sarah Ann had three more children; Violet, Percy and William Arthur. By this time Fannie and Sarah had left home while Annie, John Richard and Gertrude were at home and all worked in cotton mills.

To America – 1923. On 22 October 1923, the family of Nellie (nee Broadhurst), William Thomas and May HOWORTH set sail aboard the S.S. Megantic from Liverpool, England. With them is Nellie’s mother, Sarah Ann BROADHURST now a widow and listed at 5′-2″ tall with grey hair and grey eyes. It is the first time to America for all of the party and they all declare their intent to become US citizens. They arrive into Boston on November 1^st. They are headed to Utica, New York and the home of Arthur and Gertrude ADAMS nee Broadhurst at 543 Main Street.

Richard and Sarah Ann Deaths. About 12 miles north-northwest from Heywood, Richard BROADHURST died Monday 19 July 1910 at the age of 58 at 7 Colliers Row, Oswaldtwistle, Blackburn. His death certificate states: “Heart failure accelerated by injuries received on the 18th of June whilst riding his bicycle by coming into collision with another cyclist.” The deadly bicycle accident occurred in Haslingden, Lancashire Cheshire, about 4 miles from Oswaldtwistle. Richard’s oldest daughter Frances M Crossley nee Broadhurst lived in Haslingden. Richard was buried in the Blackburn Cemetery on Saturday 23 July 1910.

Sarah Ann Jones BROADHURST died Sunday 09 May 1926, in the Utica, New York, at the age of 64 or 65. See her obituary here.

Percy BROADHURST was born on 22 January 1895 in Heywood, Lancashire, England. Percy was the tenth child of Richard Broadhurst and Sarah Ann JONES. On 20 December 1920, Percy married Edith Annie BRADBURY, born on 22 October 1899. (BRADBURY was her mother’s name later in life, it’s not confirmed if that was Edith’s maiden name). Percy and Edith Annie had two children:

1. Kenneth (b 1923, d 19 May 1977, Ogdensburg, NY)
2. Donald G. (b 15 August 1935, Utica, NY; d 01 February 2009, Port Orange, FL)

1901 England Census. Five year old Percy lived in the family’s Peel Street home. Two of his older sisters had married and moved out by this time. Fannie CROSSLEY nee Broadhurst and Sarah WOODWARD nee Broadhurst both lived in Haslingden, Lancashire.

To America – 1913. When Percy was 18 years old he sailed without other family members aboard the S.S. Adriatic from Liverpool on 10 April arriving in New York, NY 19 April 1913. He was headed to Lowell, Massachusetts where his sister, Frances M CROSSLEY nee Broadhurst lived at the time. The address looks like 5 West Tenth St but it is slightly illegible. He lists his mother, Sarah BROADHURST as his nearest living relative in England and her address at the time was Castle Street, Blackburn (house number is perhaps 10 or 19).

Back to England – 1914/5. In Percy’s WWI service record, he indicates in a letter that he returned with his brother (unnamed) to England for a holiday arriving Liverpool aboard the S.S. Bohemian on 25 December 1914 and ended up enlisting. At this date, I’ve found no record of the Bohemian in Liverpool at that date. Perhaps he joined brothers John Richard and Peter Ernest BROADHURST on their Bohemian voyage in 1915.

World War I. Percy BROADHURST, now living at 2 Plymouth Street, Blackburn, joins the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 03 November 1915. His mother is listed as next of kin and her address given as 36 Smithy St, Blackburn. He gives his occupation as “clerk.” Three days later he reported to Fort Brockhurst in Gosport, England. Percy was discharged 27 November 1918. He saw active service on three occasions and was discharged due to having been “gassed” thereby “unfit for further service.” He was in regiment 6274 and his rank was “Gunner” in the Royal Garrison Artillery at the time of his discharge. In 1920 he lists his address as 26 Fir Street, Patricroft. His records are part of the “First World War Burnt Documents” collection

Back to America – 1924. This time Percy BROADHURST was married to Edith Annie BRADBURY and had their one son, 5-year old Kenneth with them on the voyage. The family arrived in New York, again, for Percy, on the S.S. Adriatic, on 22 September, 1924 from Liverpool. Percy, now 28, is listed as an Electrical Engineer on the ship’s manifest and the family was headed to New York Mills, Utica, New York. The manifest indicates they were going to his mother’s house, Sarah Ann Broadhurst, at 343 Maine (probably 543 Main) Street.

1930 US Census. Six years later the family rented 328 North Genesee St, Utica, NY for $25 a month. Percy was a “Supervisor Heat” for the Utica Gas and Electric Company. He worked for Niagara Mohawk Power Company for 36 years and was a superintendent at the time he left the company.

The Queen Mary – 1948. Percy (52), Edith (48) and 11-year old son Donald G. BROADHURST (b.1937) were aboard The Queen Mary. They left from Southampton on 25 August 1948 and arrived in New York on 30 August 1948. They were in “tourist” class.  Their address is given as 2-1/2 Westmorland Street, Whitesboro, NY

Move to Florida. Sometime around 1971 Percy and Edith Annie moved to Florida.

The deaths of Percy and Edith Annie. Percy died Sunday, 25 January, 1976 in Port Orange, Florida three days after his birthday at the age of 81. He passed away in Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. Percy and Edith lived in Utica (to include Whitesboro) for 48 years. A former member of the Faxton Masonic Lodge, Utica, a Masonic service was conducted for Percy. He is buried in Daytona Beach, FL. His younger brother, William BROADHURST, died the following day in St. Petersburg Beach, FL.

At this time, Edith Annie‘s death is only known through the Social Security Death Index; she died in July, 1986, also in Port Orange Florida.

Violet BROADHURST was born in 03 Feb 1893 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England. She was the youngest daughter and ninth child of Richard BROADHURST and Sarah Ann JONES. On 22 November 1917 she married James E. HUGHES in Lowell, MA. Sometime later she married William DAVIS. Violet is associated with one child in some records but it is unclear if she was the birth-mother:

1901 England Census. Seven year old Violet lived in Heywood, Lancashire at the Peel Street family home.

To America – 1907. The S.S. Adriatic manifest indicates that Violet had been to America before, in 1907. The is an arrival record into Canada in February 1907 that lists a married Frank CROSSLEY and Violet CROSSLEY, perhaps was really Violet Broadhurst as other records show this family to be close and to travel together. The ship was the Empress of Ireland which arrived into New Brunswick, Canada on 16 February 1907 in from Liverpool. John J WOODWARD is also aboard; he is the husband of Sarah BROADHURST. I don’t find her listing on board.

To America – 1911. With her 35 year old sister, Frances M CROSSLEY nee Broadhurst and her nine year old daughter Elizabeth, 17 year old Violet head to America on the S.S. Adriatic. They leave from Liverpool on 26 August 1911 and arrive in New York on September 3^rd. They are headed to the Crossley house at 18 Second St in Lowell, MA. Next of kin in England is listed as her brother John Broadhurst at 17 (unintelligible) Street, Newton Heath. Violet’s occupation, at 17, is listed as “cutter.” Violet’s passage was paid by her brother-in-law, Frank CROSSLEY.

Lowell City Directory – 1917. Violet BROADHURST is listed: “operative bds 26 Read”

Evelyn – 1918. A daughter, Evelyn was born in 1918.  At this time, I cannot find any record of James and Violet being together beyond their marriage announcement in 1917. However, I have located a 1920 US Census record of a William T. Davis living with his sister and his 30-month old daughter, Evelyn. No spouse is recorded.

1930 US Census. By now, Violet (36) is Mrs. William DAVIS (he is 42) living in Whitestown, Oneida County, NY. They rented their place at 462 Main Street for $26 a month. Along with 12 year old daughter Evelyn Davis, Violet’s younger brother and his family live with them. William BROADHURST (32), his wife Emily BROADHURST (30) and their son Lawrence BROADHURST (6) share the household. Both Williams work at the gas and electric company, Davis as a machinist and Broadhurst as a laborer.  Violet is a “finisher” in a cotton mill. It appears that William DAVIS had been married before as it’s reported that he was 25 years old at his first marriage. Violet is reported at 24 at her first marriage.

The death of Violet and William. After a long illness, Violet died at the age of 88 in the Rome Hospital, NY, on Wednesday, 20 October, 1982. Surviving her was her daughter Evelyn, now Mrs. Evelyn FARR of Kissimmee, FL. Previously, she lived at 12 Curran Road, Whitesboro, NY. She is buried in Oriskany Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband William Davis.

"Jack" and "Edddie" and maybe baby Eva

John Richard BROADHURST was the eldest son of Richard Broadhurst and Sarah Ann JONES and was born on 28 March 1884 in Leigh, England. He was baptized on 17 March 1885 in Newchurch, Lancashire. Richard lived with his parents until at least 1901.

In 1906 at about 22 years old he married 19 year old Edith Mary BAYLEY (abt 1887, Pendleton, Lancashire) in St Paul, Clitheroe, Lancashire. John Richard and Edith Mary had 3 children:

1. Harold (b 06 Feb 1908, Newton Heath, Manchester, d 30 Nov 1944 New York Mills, NY, married Emily COLLINS)
2. John George (b 03 Aug 1910, d 20 Nov 1923, Lowell, MA)
3. Eva (b 01 July [April?] 1914, Lowell, MA, d 17 Jan 1970, Rochester, NY)

To America – 1910. While the earliest indication of John Richard and Edith Mary visit to the United States is 1908 (1910 US Census, S.S. Canada manifest, S.S. Megantic manifest states: 2 yrs to Oct 1910″) the earliest recorded trip found thus far is aboard the S.S. Canada sailing from Liverpool, England on 03 March 1910 and arriving 10 days later in Portland, Maine on 12 March 1910 with infant son Harold. Along with them were John Richard’s younger sister Gertrude ADAMS (nee Broadhurst) and her daughter Jessie ADAMS. According to the ship manifest the group was headed to their sister Sarah WOODWARD’s (nee Broadhurst) house at 30 Payne St, Dover, New Hampshire. John Richard’s occupation is noted as “warehouseman.”

1910 US Census. By the time of the census, John Richard, Edith Mary and Harold lived at the residence of James WOODWARD, his wife Sarah and their two children, Sarah A. and Francis along with the Woodward’s 53 year old Irish servant, Margaret Scanlon. The residence was in Dover, New Hampshire at 130 Payne Street, now Henry Law Avenue. John’s occupation is listed as “Street Car, Meter Man.” James Woodward works as a laborer in a cotton mill and Sarah is a cotton mill “Carder.” After the census polling Edith Mary has her second child, John George.

1911 England Census. The family returned to England and at the time of the 1911 Census lived with Edith Mary’s father, George BAYLEY, a widower “domestic gardener.” Also in the household were two Bayley sons, George Frederick and William and their sister, Lonah.  The address was 37 Miriam Street, Failsworth, Newton Heath, Manchester.

Back to America -1912. A return trip for John Richard, Edith Mary, Harold and for the first time infant son John George is recorded on the S.S. Megantic from Liverpool. Leaving on 06 February, 1912 they arrived in Boston on Valentine’s Day. John Richard’s nearest living relative in England is noted as his mother, Sarah Ann BROADHURST living at 8 Gregsan (sp?) Lane, Newton Heath and Edith’s as her father George BALEY residing at the Miriam Street address as noted above. Their destination is Lowell, MA the residence of Mrs. Crossley (his sister “Fanny”) and brother, at 18 Second St., Lowell, MA. Also on board the Megantic is John Richard’s younger sister, Gertrude ADAMS nee Broadhurst with her children Jessie and Arthur.

Lowell City Directory – 1913. John BROADHURST is listed as a “driver” and his address is 5 Raymond Place.

Back to America – 1915. John Richard returns again to America in 1915 on the S.S. Bohemian, this time with his younger brother, Peter Ernest BROADHURST. The pair leaves Liverpool on New Year’s Eve, 31 December, 1914 and arrive Boston 14 January, 1915. No next of kin is listed for either brother but their destination is Lowell, MA. John Richard to 6 Hampshire Place and Peter Ernest to 4 Hampshire Place. John Richard remained in the US until 1916 (S.S. Tunisian manifest).

Return to England. – 1916. Edith (“wife”) with her three children in tow, Harold, John George and Eva, returns to Liverpool on 06 September 1916 aboard Cunard’s Saxonia in from New York, NY. She list’s her address as the Miriam Street, Newton Heath residence as noted above.

World War I. On 18 November 1916, at the age of about 32, the 5′-8″ tall John Richard enlisted in the British Army. At the time the family lived at 16 Florence Street, Winton, Manchester. He listed his occupation as “Chauffer, Motor Driver.” John Richard was discharged 15 October 1917 as “no longer physical fit for War Service. Epilepsy”.

Back to America – 1919. Again from Liverpool, this time with four year old Eva, the family boarded the S.S. Tunisian on May 31^st and arrived in Quebec, Canada on June 10^th. This time they were going to Fanny and Frank CROSSLEY’s residence at 506 E. Merrimach (sp?) Street, Lowell, MA. John Richard’s occupation is listed as “Motor Car Driver.”

1920 US Census. At this time the family has not been found in this census.

Return to England – 1920. Just before Christmas, December 20^th, the entire family returned to Liverpool. This time they were accompanied by the Peter Ernest BROADHURST family: Peter, a mill worker, wife Elizabeth, son Ernest and daughter Amy. John Richard’s occupation at this time is “chaffeur.” They took The White Star Line’s “Celtic” from New York, NY.

To America – 1921. The family returns to the United States in 1921 aboard the S.S. Haverford. They set sail from Liverpool on July 27^th and arrive in Philadelphia on August 8^th. They’re bound for John’s younger brother’s house, Peter BROADHURST at 18 Jefferson Ave, Hillsgrove, New Hampshire. John Richard’s occupation is listed as “waterman.” Edith is noted as 5′-4″ with brown hair and blue eyes and a housewife. The family’s last address in England is recorded as 37 Miriam Street, Manchester, as above, and it’s now noted as the residence of his mother, Sarah Ann BROADHURST.

Lowell City Directory – 1922 John and Edith BROADHURST are listed in the city directory and their address is “48 Fourth.”

The death of a son – 1923. John George died Tuesday, 20 Nov 1923 at home, 77 West Fourth Street, Lowell, MA, at the age of 13 years, 3 months and 17 days. The funeral took place at home on Friday, November 23^rd and was conducted by Reverend Grannis from St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. John George is buried “in the family lot in the Lowell cemetery.” (The Lowell Sun 21 Nov 1923 and Lowell Courier-Citizen 24 Nov 1923)

1930 US Census. John Richard was a long time employee of the Utica State Hospital and in the 1930 Census is listed as an “attendant.” The hospital is listed as “Utica State Hospital for Insane.” At this time Edith Mary has not been located in this census.

1940′s. Edith Mary retires after having worked several years in the “former State Street textile mill.” (obit)

John Richard and Edith Mary Deaths. John Richard died in a Utica hospital on 21 September 1962 at the age of 78. John Richard is buried in the Waterville Cemetery. (obituary, Utica Daily Press 22 Sept 1962). About four years later, Edith Mary passed away, also at the age of 78, in the Waterville St. Elizabeth Hospital. She is also buried in the Waterville Cemetery. (obituary, Utica Daily Press, date unknown, 1966)

Peter Ernest BROADHURST was born on 19 Feb 1889 in Little Town Wardle, Rochdale, Lancashire. He was the 7^th child of Richard BROADHURST and Sarah Ann JONES. 19 year old Peter married 18 year old Elizabeth ASPIN on 12 Dec 1908 in St. Barnabas church, Blackburn, England. Elizabeth ASPIN was born in 1890 and was the daughter of John ASPIN. Peter Ernest and Elizabeth had 3 children:

1. Amy (b 06 May 1909, may have died Jan 1983, married Matthew SALKIND)
2. Ernest (b 29 Jan 1911, Blackburn, Lancashire, died 03 July 1960)
3. Robert T (b 21 Sept 1926, Providence, RI, d 09 Feb 1936)

1891 England Census. Peter’s family lived at 2 Spadescroft (sp?) in the civil parish of Crompton, Lancashire. His father, Richard BROADHURST, was a farm laborer and siblings Fanny (14) and Annie (12) were cotton mill workers.

1901 England Census. Peter (11) lived at home now in Heywood, Lancashire at 1 Peel Street. His father, Richard BROADHURST, was a farm laborer and three of his older siblings, Annie (22), John Richard (18) and Gertrude (16) were cotton mill workers.

1911 England Census. Peter now lived 12 miles away, with his wife Elizabeth in a four room residence at 30 Newton St, Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire and their children, Amy and Ernest. Peter Ernest is now a “bander in ring spinning” at a cotton mill and Elizabeth is a “ring spinner.” Also living in the household at the time of the census was Peter Ernest’s younger sister, Nellie (spelled “Nillie” by Peter on the household census) she too worked in the cotton mill as a ring spinner and a visitor, William HOWORTH, a “mule spinner” at the mill. The following year Nellie and William HOWORTH wed.

To America – 1912. Peter Ernest heads to the US without his family aboard the S.S. Arabic departing Liverpool on 23 April 1912 and arriving into Boston on 03 May 1912. His stated destination is 18 Second Street, Lowell, MA, the home of his brother John Richard BROADHURST which was also the home of his sister, Fanny Crossley. His occupation is listed as “jobber” and “ring spinner.” On the passenger list for those leaving the UK, his occupation is listed as “miner.”

Peter’s family joins him in America 4 months later. Elizabeth (listed as a ring spinner), daughter Amy and son Ernest take the S.S. Cymric from Liverpool on 27 August, 1912 and disembark in Boston on September 5^th. Elizabeth lists her nearest living relative in England as Nellie Bottomley, 95 Caddington St, Blackburn. Passage for the trio was paid by Peter Ernest. Their destination is 18 Second St., Lowell, MA.

It’s unknown at this time how long any of the family they stayed in America before returning to England; only to return again to America.

Back to America – 1914. Once again the wife and two children without Peter Ernest take the S.S. Cymric from Liverpool. They leave on 19 May, 1914 arriving into Boston on May 28^th. Again the passage is paid for by Peter Ernest and Mrs. Bottomley is noted as nearest living relative to Elizabeth. This voyage Elizabeth is a housewife. Their destination is listed as her husband, Peter, at 6 Hampshire Place, Lowell, MA.

Back to America – 1915. Peter Ernest BROADHURST returns again to America in 1915 on the S.S. Bohemian, this time with his older brother, John Richard BROADHURST. The pair leaves Liverpool on New Year’s Eve, 31 December, 1914 and arrive Boston 14 January, 1915. No next of kin is listed for either brother but their destination is Lowell, MA. John Richard to 6 Hampshire Place and Peter Ernest to 4 Hampshire Place.

Motorcycle Accident – 1916. Peter was in a serious motorcycle accident in Lowell on May 30^th. He broke his jaw and left thigh bone after being thrown off his motorcycle into a stone wall. He lived at 4 Hampshire Place at the time of the accident next to his brother John Richard BROADHURST and his family.

Lowell City Directory – 1917. Peter BROADHURST is listed: “rem to New York city.”

World War I. By June of 1918 the family had moved to 537 Main Street, New York Mills, New York. Peter Ernest is a Blacksmith’s helper and on June 15^th becomes enters the “Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force” in Canadian Engineers service. He signs up in Utica, New York and by 22 November 1918 is recommended for a medically unfit discharge which was ordered on 15 January, 1919. His condition included, “weakness left knee, difficulty in mastication, one inch shorter left leg, walks with a decided limp” much of which was the result of his 1916 motorcycle accident.

1920 US Census. Still renting at 537 Main Street, the town name is now indicated as New Hartford rather than New York Mills. Peter Ernest was back in the cotton mill as perhaps a machinist (census is not legible) and Elizabeth is a “cutter” in a cotton mill. Amy is now 10 years old and Ernest is 8.

A career with the power company. In about 1926 Peter Ernest began a 25 year career with the Utica power company that ended with his death in 1951 when he was a superintendent at the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation’s coke plant.

1930 US Census. The family has now moved to 1411 Burrstone Road, Utica, NY. They rented the residence for $30 a month. Peter Ernest was now a “producer man” for the gas and electric company. Elizabeth was a “cutter” at a velvet mill, Amy was a “spinner” and Ernest was a “band-boy” in a cotton mill. New to the household was Elizabeth’s last son, Robert T. BROADHURST, born in 1925, fourteen years after Ernest.

A tragic death. 09 February 1936. A Sunday family trip aboard the “Snow Train” from Utica to Old Forge, in the Adirondacks ended with the death of nine year old Robert T. BROADHURST. Riding a toboggan tied to the back of a vehicle Robert T. died three hours after being thrown off and into another vehicle. Five children were on the toboggan at the time of the accident including Eva BROADHURST, his cousin and the daughter of John Richard BROADHURST. Robert T. suffered a fractured skull and was taken back on the Snow Train to a Utica hospital (Faxton sp?) after seeing a doctor in Old Forge. No one else suffered any injuries. The driver of the car pulling the toboggan testified he was unaware of the sled being attached to his vehicle. The investigating coroner found no negligence in the case. The family lived on Hope Street, Utica at the time of the tragedy.

The death of Peter Ernest. On 24 January 1951 Peter Ernest was found dead at home, 63 Main Street, Whitesboro, as a result of gas poisoning. Three burners on the gas stove were on but not lighted. The coroner ruled the death accidental, in part as the burners were being used as heat as the coal stove was out at the time of the accident. Elizabeth was not here at the time of the death. There was much tension between the two and some family suggests Peter Ernest’s death was a suicide.

The death of Elizabeth. Elizabeth died 02 August 1959 in Kingston, the home of her daughter Amy SALKIND nee BROADHURST, after a “long illness.” She is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Kingston, NY. There is no mention of Peter Ernest in her obituary.

From a farm in Cheshire to the Cotton Mills of Manchester across the Atlantic to the Mills of Dover, Lowell and Utica, and then even on to the Niagara – Mohawk Power Company, many in this eleven-sibling  family group really stuck together. They are the children of Richard BROADHURST and Sarah Ann JONES.

It has a good search tool and the database contains many of the newspapers that covered the parts of the state our relatives lived (and live) in.  I’ve found numerous obituaries (check out my “obit” section) and wedding announcements among other newsworthy stories of our families. Check it out if you haven’t already.

Broadhurst Families is a new website and blog dedicated to–and finding–the many families around the world related to John BROADHURST and Frances ADSHEAD. John and Frances, married in St. Mary’s Parish church in Stockport, Cheshire in 1839 had five children; Elisha, William, Sarah, Peter and my Great Grandfather, Richard.

Our names are now; ADAMS, ASPIN, BAILEY, BAKER BONE, BRADBURY, BRADSHAW, BROADHURST, COLLINS, CROSSLEY, DAVIS, HOWARTH, HOWORTH, HUXLEY, JONES, LEVINE, PABST, PHILLIPS, RINFRET, SCHLETTER and WOODWARD among others.

The goal of this blog is to post genealogical findings, but perhaps more importantly, share stories of our families and perhaps reunite our “lost” cousins around the world.

ADAMS, ASPIN, BAILEY, BRADBURY, BRADSHAW, BROADHURST, COLLINS, CROSSLEY, DAVIS, HOWARTH (alt HOWORTH) and WOODWARD were a close knit group.

Each is related to one of the eleven children of Richard BROADHURST and Sarah Ann JONES.

Their families worked in the cotton mills in and around Manchester together; they emigrated from England to the US with one another’s help, then worked the mills of Dover, NH, Lowell, MA and New York Mills, NY together. Later they even worked together at Niagara – Mohawk Power Company together.

She may have died sometime before 1951 as she is not listed in the obituaries of her other siblings; the earliest available one is that of her brother Peter Ernest in 1951.

Mary BROADHURST. “May” was born in 1888 in Leigh, Lancashire, England. She is the sixth of eleven children born to Richard and Sarah Ann BROADHURST. She married Ralph BRADSHAW at St. Peter in Blackburn in 1911. She appears in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 England censuses. By 1911 she is married, 22 years old and living with her husband, Ralph (22) at 2 Gregson Lane, Blackburn. She is a cotton mill ring spinner and Ralph is a “Bass Dresser.” Ralph writes that they have been married under one year and that both of their places of birth are “not know”. The next evidence of May is when she visits her younger sister, Nellie HOWARTH nee Broadhurst in 1947. On her first trip to America, she takes the S.S. Marine Tiger out of Southampton on 02 August 1947 and arrives in New York on August 11^th. Her home address, and that of her husband Jack (maybe Ralph is a middle name) BRADSHAW, is given as 17 Victoria Ave, Cherry Tree, Blackburn. Today that address is in Feniscowles, Blackburn. She’s a 59 year old housewife that’s 5′-5″ tall and has brown hair and blue eyes with a mole on her arm. Nellie lived at 1661 Wesley Ave in Utica.

She may have died sometime before 1976 as she is noted in the obituaries of her other siblings but not that of the 1976 death of her brother Percy.
