29 Clover Ave, Floral Park, NY 11001

Peter EVERS (55) reported to the Census Enumerator that on April 1, 1940 he owned his house located in the incorporated place of Floral Park within the Town of Hempstead. It was valued at $6,500. Interestingly, Peter is recorded as 58 years old in the 1930 Census. That census did not record the person providing the family information. At that time Peter and Dorothy lived in Jamaica Queens. In the 1940 household along with his wife Dorothy (Schletter, 33) was her Maternal Grandmother Doris (Ritter) SCHWARZ (74). Peter’s highest grade of school completed was 4 years of High School as was Dorothy’s. Doris made it through the eighth grade.

Peter and Dorothy were born in the state of New York. Doris was born in Norway. It is recorded that on April 1, 1935 Peter lived in Albany, NY and Dorothy lived in Brooklyn. On that day in 1935, Doris is reported to have lived on a farm in “Christana”, Norway. Christiania, Norway is Oslo.

Peter worked 44 hours the week of March 24 – 30, 1940 as a “Printed Cards” salesman. He worked 34 weeks in 1939 and earned $1,800.

One in twenty persons listed in each 1940 Census were required to supply supplemental information. Luckily, Doris was one in twenty. From this additional information we learn that her Father was born in Norway and her Mother in Germany. She spoke Norwegian in her earliest childhood. Doris was widowed, married only once, got married at 19 and had 2 children. Her usual occupation was “Home” and she did not have a Social Security number.

Zillow.com today reports that this 1918 built, 2bed/1.5bath 1,178 SF house on its .11 acre lot last sold in September 1995 for $180,000 and is estimated by Zillow to be worth $441,000.

Take a look at the census lines 27 – 29 in the image attached. There is also supplemental information about Doris on the very last line of the page.

The photo above–click photo for larger image–was provide by Bill Hoke at our recent Broadhurst Families reunion, it’s of our family taken on the Isle of Man.
By this time all eleven of Richard and Sarah’s children had been born: 1) Fannie, 1877 ; 2) Annie, 1879; 3) Sarah, 1882; 4) Jack, 1884; 5) Gertrude, 1887; 6) May, 1888; 7) Peter, 1889; 8) Nellie, 1891; 9) Violet, 1894; 10) Percy, 1896; and 11) Willie, 1898.

Thirty relative strangers shared a wonderful weekend together this June. Cousins mostly as we’re all related by virtue of sharing a connection to one of the eleven children of Richard and Sarah Ann Jones Broadhurst. Thanks go to the families of Harold Broadhurst and his sister Shirley Smaka for hosting a cocktail party and then arranging a dinner for us at Foxy’s near Alexandria Bay. The next day Gary and Kathy Snow hosted us at their riverfront home in Alexandria Bay, a place many knew as The Adams Greentop Cabins from childhood. Gary’s grandparents owned the property originally and it held wonderful memories for many of the cousins.

Got that? Not pictured are Steve Whitman and Barry Schwartz who were both busy taking pictures for the rest of us. Also, the night before at Foxy’s we were joined by Karen Broadhurst as well as Terry and Kirstin Underwood. In the photo below we’re standing in front one of the original cabins.

The Internet Surname Database web site provides this definition of BROADHURST

This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a habitational name from a minor place so called, perhaps from Broadhurst Manor Farm in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. The placename is derived from the Middle English (1200 – 1500) “brode”, from the Olde English pre 7th Century “brad”, meaning broad, given as a nickname for a stout or fat person, and the Olde English “hurst”, a wooded hill. The first element could also be a descriptive term for the broad wood. In the Middle Ages, to call a person broad or fat was considered to be a compliment, as it was looked on as a sign of grandeur. The surname, however, could also be locational from one of the seven to ten thousand villages and hamlets which have disappeared in Britain since circa 1100, due to such natural disasters as the Black Death of 1348, in which an eighth of the population perished, or to the widespread practice of “clearing” large areas of land to make sheep pastures during the height of the wool-trade in the 15th Century. The place is thought to have been in Cheshire, due to the large number of recordings in this county, and the name has the same derivation as the place in Sussex. Recorded in the Cheshire Church Registers is the marriage of John Broadhurst and Alice Wood, on October 8th 1594, at Prestbury. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Roger de Brodhurst, which was dated 1281, witness in the “Assize Rolls of Lancashire”, during the reign of King Edward 1, known as “The Hammer of the Scots”, 1271 – 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to “develop” often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling. © Copyright: Name Orgin Research www.surnamedb.com 1980 – 2010

The bride is Eva Broadhurst. Eva is the daughter of John Richard and Edith BROADHURST. Twenty-one-ish Eva married Leland Francis Wittenbeck in the Olivet Presbyterian Church in 1936, perhaps August based on newspaper clippings. The little flower girl is Shirley Broadhurst, Eva’s niece, the daughter of Harold and Emily BROADHURST. Ev’s cousin, Evelyn Davis, daughter of Violet Broadhurst was the Maid of Honor. Doris Wittenbeck was the Bridesmaid. I don’t which which is Evelyn or Doris in the picture. I don’t know the identity of the other three men in the picture but Clayton Buckingham was listed as the Best Man in the wedding announcement.

Aloha cousins,

My wife and I visited my cousin Kay Salkind Schwartz and her husband Barry in late September. Kay and I are grandchildren of Peter and Elizabeth. Their daughter Amy is her mother, son Ernest is my father. I hadn’t seen Kay in at least 40-something years. Maybe 50-ish, but who’s counting. She has a treasure trove of Broadhurst Families photos. Thank you, Kay! I’ve posted a first batch in the “PHOTOS” section: The Peter Ernest and Elizabeth Broadhurst Family.
